When All You Have Is What God Said

“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering; for he who promised is faithful.”— Hebrews 10:23

Today, I found myself speaking with several people about trusting God in the midst of uncertainty. The circumstances were different. The questions were different. The concerns they carried were deeply personal. Yet beneath each conversation was the same quiet struggle:

How do I continue to trust God when I do not know what is going to happen next?

Uncertainty has a way of unsettling us. It can cause us to revisit what we once believed, question what once seemed clear, and search anxiously for some indication that everything will work out the way we hoped. We begin looking for new information, additional confirmation, or visible evidence that God is still working. But there are seasons when God does not give us anything new. There are moments when He simply asks us to hold firmly to what He has already said.

Hold Fast

Hebrews 10:23 tells us to hold fast. To hold fast means that we do not casually loosen our grip when the circumstances become difficult. We do not release our confession because the answer has been delayed. We do not abandon what God has spoken simply because the pathway toward its fulfillment has become unclear.

We Must Hold On

Not because we understand everything.

Not because we can predict what will happen.

Not because there is visible evidence that the promise is unfolding.

We hold on because He who promised is faithful.

Our confidence is not ultimately in the promise alone.

Our confidence is in the character of the God who made the promise.

God does not ask us to trust in empty words. His promises are supported by His faithfulness, sustained by His power, and secured by His unchanging nature. When all you have is what God said, you still have something firm enough to stand upon.

When the Evidence Seems to Disagree

There are times when what we see appears to contradict what God has spoken.

The door does not open.

The situation does not change.

The provision has not yet come.

The healing is not visible.

The relationship remains strained.

The direction still feels uncertain.

In those moments, we may begin to wonder whether we misunderstood God, whether the promise still applies, or whether too much time has passed.

Sarah knew something about waiting beyond what seemed reasonable.

Hebrews 11:11 tells us:

“By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised." (ESV)

Sarah’s circumstances gave her every reason to believe that the promise could no longer be fulfilled. Time had passed. Her body had aged. The natural evidence offered no support for what God had said.

Yet Scripture tells us that she considered God faithful.

She made a determination about His character. She concluded that the God who had spoken was still trustworthy, even when the visible evidence suggested otherwise. This does not mean that Sarah never struggled. Scripture allows us to see that she did. But her story reminds us that faith is not the absence of questions. Faith is the decision to keep returning to the faithfulness of God in the presence of those questions. Sometimes, the most faithful thing we can do is bring our uncertain hearts back to what we know is true:

God is Faithful

The space between the promise and its fulfillment can feel long. It is in that space that we often become tired, anxious, and vulnerable to discouragement. We may feel as though nothing is happening because nothing has changed outwardly. But waiting is not evidence that God has forgotten. Silence is not evidence that God has withdrawn. Uncertainty is not evidence that God has become unfaithful.

The God who gave the promise is still present while you wait upon it.

He is preserving your heart. He is strengthening your faith. He is teaching you to recognize His presence apart from visible outcomes. He is developing within you a confidence that does not depend upon immediate answers. God is not only faithful at the conclusion of the story. He is faithful in every moment leading to it.

“God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.” 1 Corinthians 1:9 (ESV)

God’s faithfulness is not an occasional response to our circumstances. Faithfulness is who He is. He is faithful when we can see Him moving. He is faithful when we cannot trace His hand. He is faithful when the promise feels near. He is faithful when fulfillment appears distant. He is faithful when our hearts are strong. He remains faithful when our confidence trembles.

Our certainty may fluctuate, but His character does not.

Perhaps you have been asking God for another sign. Perhaps you have been waiting for additional confirmation. Perhaps you have been searching for something new because what He said before no longer feels sufficient for the season you are now facing. But what if God is not giving you another word because He is teaching you to trust the word He has already given? There are moments when faith must become quiet enough to say:

I do not know what God will do next, but I know what He has said.

I do not know how He will provide, but I know He is faithful.

I do not know when the answer will come, but I know He has not forgotten me.

I do not know how this story will unfold, but I know the One who holds it.

Trust does not require us to pretend that we understand the outcome.

Trust asks us to remain anchored in the One who does. You may not have all the answers. You may not have a clear timeline. You may not have visible evidence. You may not have the assurance that everything will happen according to your preferred plan.

But you have the Word of God.

You have the character of God. You have the faithfulness of God. And when all you have is what God said, you still have enough. Allow your heart to remember that the One who made the promise is faithful.

Then say this aloud:

I will hold fast without wavering. I may not know what happens next, but I know that God is faithful.
